Our women down Uruguay

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia beat Uruguay 3-0 for their first win in the women's hockey Olympic qualifying tournament in Victoria, Canada, on Saturday.

They also ended their goal drought in the six-team tournament with goals by Nadia Abdul Rahman (38th, 44th) and Rosmah Asrin (68th).

The win put Malaysia in fifth place after the preliminary fixtures with four points from a win, a draw and three defeats. They will play against Uruguay again in the classification match for fifth-sixth place.

Italy beat Ireland 2-0 to qualify for the final against favourites South Korea, who defeated Canada 4-0 to collect full points from their preliminary round.

Only the winners earn a berth in the Beijing Olympics in August.
