Chii Lin Qualifies For Beijing Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR, May 4 (Bernama) -- Leung Chii Lin, 17, smashed to a new national and championship record in the 50m freestyle event on the final day of the Malaysian Open Swimming Championship at the Bukit Jalil National Aquatic Centre here Sunday.

Trained by former national swimmer Lim Keng Liat, Chii Lin recorded a time of 26.18s to erase the record set by Perak swimmer Cindy Ong who timed 26.53s at the Negeri Sembilan Malaysia Games (Sukma) in 2004.

She also erased the championship record of 26.65s by Chui Lai Kwan set last year in Paroi, Negeri Sembilan.

She is the fifth swimmer to qualify for the Beijing Olympics in August.

"My target was in the 100m freestyle but I only won silver. I am surprised to win the 50m freestyle, enabling me to compete in the Beijing Olympics," said the student from Kota Kinabalu.

The other swimmer to qualify for the Beijing Olympics under category B is Lew Yih Wey of Negeri Sembilan.

Swimmers who qualified on merit are Daniel Bego, Siow Yi Ting and Khoo Cai Lin.
