KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) -- Security concerns are being addressed for the Malaysian leg of the Olympic torch run on Monday, said the Olympic Council of Malaysia.
OCM honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said the police were working closely with the council on it.
"As to whether the distance will be shortened because of the security concerns, so far we have not made a decision on this. The police and us (OCM) will respond according to the prevailing situation," he told a media briefing on the run at Wisma OCM here Thursday.
Also present was OCM vice president Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan.
This time around, more attention is being paid to the run after it was marred by pro-Tibetan protestors in London, Paris and San Francisco.
Sieh was confident there would not be such problems here.
Only Kuala Lumpur is involved in the run, which will cover a total distance of 80 kilometres with the main venues being Dataran Merdeka, the Merdeka Stadium, Kuala Lumpur Tower and the Petronas Twin Towers.
Sieh said the torch runners would be given a final briefing on Sunday.
The Asian leg this week involves India and Thailand and after Kuala Lumpur, the torch will travel to Indonesia, Australia, South Korea, Japan and Vietnam before heading for Beijing.
Kuala Lumpur is hosting a leg of the run after some four decades. The last time the capital hosted it was during the Tokyo Games of 1964, the first time the Olympics was held in an Asian city.
