Plans afoot to disrupt Olympic torch run in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR:

The China Olympic Council has tipped off police of plans to disrupt the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay here on Monday.
“The information they received indicated strongly that some party is planning to disrupt the run," Federal Internal Security and Public Order director Datuk Hussin Ismail said today.

“We are checking if the threat is from locals or foreigners,” he said Hussin after attending the launching of ‘Anda Bijak, Anda Selamat’ road safety campaign organised by Public Bank here today

The 16.5km run will begin at Dataran Merdeka and end at KLCC.

Hussin said 600 police personnel will be on duty during the torch run. The large number of personnel was needed because it will be a working day and they need it to ensure smooth traffic.
The torch run had already been confronted with disruptions, especially in London where activists would try to extinguish the torch or grab it from bearers to protest China's human rights record.
