Malaysian Athletes' Performance At London 30th Olympiad

LONDON, Aug 13 (Bernama) -- Malaysia wrapped up their 2012 London Olympics outing with a silver from shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei and a bronze from diver Pandelela Rinong Anak Pamg, thus equalled the Atlanta feat in 1996.

Thirty athletes represented the country in seven disciplines -- archery, badminton, cycling, aquatics, sailing, shooting and athletics.

Malaysia first took part in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and had never missed the Games ever since except for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

ARCHERY:

Men's Recurve Team:

Cheng Chu Sian, Khairul Anuar Mohamad and Haziq Kamaruddin lost to the Mexican trio 211-216 in the third elimination rounds.

Men's Recurve Individual:

Khairul Anuar, world's number 20, equalled his senior, Cheng Chu Sian's achievement in the 2008 Beijing Olympics as both of them squandered at the quarter-finals stage.

Competing in men's recurve individual, Khairul Anuar was beaten 2-6 in the semi-finals by Japanese archer Takaharu Furukawa.

Haziq Kamaruddin was shown an early exit in the first round elimination.

Cheng Chu Sian was beaten 4-6 by his junior, Khairul Anuar in the third round.

Nurul Syafikah Hashim was beaten 2-6 by Lin Chia En from Taiwan in the women's individual recurve first elimination round.

ATHLETICS:

Two athletes competed in 2012 Games on wild cards.

Lee Hup Wei was eliminated in the men's high jump preliminary round when he finished 14th out of 18 athletes in the first heat with a leapt of 2.16m.

Noraseela Khalid finished ninth and last in the women's 400m hurdles heat when she crossed the finish line in 1 minutes 00.16 second.

SAILING:

Khairunnizam Mohd Afendy grabbed the 45th spot out of 49 sailors in the men's singles dinghy (laser) event.

SHOOTING:

Expectant mother Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi became the darling of the international media as she competed just weeks before she was due to deliver her baby. However, she failed to qualify for the final round after shooting down 392 points to finish 34th in the women's 10m air rifle event.

AQUATICS:

Diving: (Women's)

Pandelela Rinong Anak Pamgn sent Malaysians into ecstasy when she overcame the odds to deliver the 10m platform bronze.

Pandelela Rinong and Leong Mun Yee finished seventh out of eight divers, collecting 308.52 points in the final of women's synchronised 10m platform event.

Pandalela and Cheong Jun Hoong finished last out of eight pairs in the final of the women's 3m springboard event.

Cheong, Ng Yan Yee finished 20th and 24th respectively in the preliminary rounds of the women's 3m springboard event.

(Men's)

Bryan Nickson Lomas and Huang Qiang finished last in the men's synchronised 3m springboard event after collecting 405.09 points to finish at the bottom out of eight participating countries.

Bryan did not make the cut for the men's individual 10m platform semi-finals after collected 434.95 points for the 19 spot.

Yeoh Ken Nee finished ninth with 437.45 points out of 12 participants in the men's 3m springboard final.

Heidi Gan finished 16th in women's 10km marathon open water swimming after registering 2 hours, 45 seconds.

BADMINTON:

Datuk Lee Chong Wei contributed a silver after losing 21-15, 10-21 19-21 in a nail biting match in 79 minutes to Lin Dan of China in the men's singles final.

It was Chong Wei's second silver in the Olympics.

Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong lost 9-21, 19-21 to Cai Yun/Fu Haifeng of China in the bronze medal decider.

Women's singles shuttler Tee Jing Ye's chances fizzled out at the Group stage.

Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying lost all their Group matches.

FENCING:

World's number 37 Yu Peng Kean advanced to second round but was beaten by world number five Szilagyi Aron from Hungary, losing 1-15 in the men's sabre individual event.

He was the second Malaysian fencer to compete in the Olympics after Ronnie Theseira, who took part in individual foil, epee and sabre events at the Tokyo Games in 1964.

CYCLING:

(Road Race)

Muhamad Adiq Husainie Othman and Amir Mustafa Rusli were asked to quit the 180km road race when they were 18 minutes adrift from the leader.

Track:

(Women's Keirin)

Fatehah Mustafa had an early exit when she failed to be among the top three riders in the first round repechages. She only managed the fifth spot out of six riders competing in heat 2.

(Men's Sprint)

The Pocketrocketman Mohd Azizulhasni Awang finished eight after he failed to advance to the final in the sprint event, thus repeated his Beijing 2008 debacle and way off the medal target.

He, however, renewed the Malaysian record in sprint by 1.030 seconds compared to 1.1 seconds he did in Beijing.

In the final of keirin event, Mohd Azizulhasni clinched the last spot out of five contestants.
