Irish Dash Malaysian Hopes For Olympics With 1-1 Draw

KUALA LUMPUR, March 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's hopes of booking a berth in the London Olympics' hockey tournament fizzled out when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ireland in the qualifying round in Dublin, Ireland Saturday.

Ireland, who collected 13 points to edge Malaysia by one point, will meet South Korea in the decider tomorrow to claim the right to play in the Olympics in July.

Coach Tai Beng Hai's charges started on the right foot by keeping the Irish squad at bay in the first half.

Nabil Fiqri Mohd Noor broke the deadlock in the 40th minute to put Malaysia ahead, but as they looked set to clinch the match, their hopes were dampened by Irish who drew level through a penalty corner by John Jerymn 10 minutes from time.
