Hup Wei in Olympic... Lee Hup Wei broke the national record of 2.24 metres after clearing the 2.27m in China Open yesterday.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 (Bernama) -- High jumper Lee Hup Wei soared to a new national record en route to qualifying for the Beijing Olympic Games after clearing 2.27m to win the gold in the China Open athletics championship at the new Olympic Stadium in Beijing today.
Hup Wei, who equalled the national record of 2.24m held by Loo Kum Zee since 1995, on his way to winning the gold medal at the Asian Track and Field championships in Amman, Jordan last year, beat two Chinese jumpers to match the Qualifying mark for Category B.
Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) deputy president Karim Ibrahim said it was a major boost to Hup Weis career since popping on to the stage after Kum Zee announced his retirement after the 2003 SEA Games in Vietnam.
"Clearing 2.27m is a very good performance and we in the MAAU are very happy for him and Im sure the entire team currently in China will be delighted after the poor performances of some of the senior athletes," he told Bernama here.
Chinas Wang Chen finished second with a height of 2.24m while third place was won by Zhao Kuansong, also of China with a 2.20m clearance.
Meanwhile, Karim added that he was informed by team manager for the meet, R. Annamalai that Asian Games pole vault gold medallist Roslinda Samsu had no jumps in all her three attempts while quarter-miler G. Vadivellan, silver medallist in the Korat SEA Games last year, decided to drop out after completing only about 600 metres in the 1,500m event.
The mens 4x100m quartet and SEA Games womens hammer throw gold medal winner Siti Shahida Abdullah also failed to make the finals.
