Chu Sian To Use Three International Competitions To Prepare For London Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- Olympics bound national elite archer Cheng Chu Sian hopes to use three international competitions to prepare for the 2012 London Olympics.

Chu Sian, crowned Olympian of the Year by the Olympic Council of Malaysia yesterday said the three competitions identified were the first Asian Grand Prix Championships in Bangkok, Thailand from Feb 15-19, Archery World Cup Stage 1 in Shanghai, China from April 10-15 and Archery World Cup Stage 3 in Ogden, United States from June 17-23.

"I hope to do my best in all three competitions which will feature some of the best archers in the world," the 25-year-old archer told Bernama here Saturday.

"National coach Lee Jae Hyung has asked me to maintain my performance although he has not set any specific target that will add on to the pressure since many world class archers will be competing," he said.

Chu Sian, winner of two gold medals in the recently concluded SEA Games held in Jakarta and Palembang, said he was undergoing centralised training at the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil to prepare for the three major championships.

The archer who had also featured in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, qualified for the 2012 London Olympics on merit, together with Haziq Kamaruddin and Khairul Anuar Mohamad after beating a trio from Poland in the Recurve team event of the World Archery Championships in Torino, Italy back in July.

He added that women archers are also expected to compete in the three championships since no woman archer has qualified for the London Olympics.
