Divers just miss out on semis spot

DIVERS Leong Mun Yee and Elizabeth Jimie missed out on making the top 18 semi-finals of the women’s 3m springboard competition after being tied at the 21st spot at the National Aquatics Centre yesterday.

Mun Yee raised Malaysian hopes when she was placed 17th after the first two dives.

However, she dropped to 19th after the third dive and a poor effort in the next dive, which saw her getting only 33.00 points, sent her tumbling down to 24th spot.

Mun Yee eventually made ground with a 63.00 in the fifth and final dive but her total of 253.50 was only good for a 21st placing in her third Olympic outing.

Olympic debutant Elizabeth fared creditably to tie with Mun Yee after recovering from a poor first dive.

Chinese diving star Guo Jingjing stayed on track for her second gold of the Games when she topped the preliminaries with 373.90. Russian Julia Pakhalina was in second spot with 358.15.

Diving team manager Edwin Chong said Mun Yee could have become the first Malaysian diver to reach the semi-finals if she had not muffed her third dive.

“If she had done well with her reverse two-and-a-half somersault routine, she could have nicked a place in the top 18,” he said.

“Now, we have to hope for the platform divers to do well in their competitions.”

Fifteen-year-old Pandelela Rinong, the youngest in the women’s competition, will make her debut in the 10m platform individual on Wednesday while Bryan Nickson will go into action two days later.
