Some of the former outstanding athletes participating as torchbearers are the Sidek badminton brothers - Razif, Jalani and Rashid. Also taking part are the former top men’s doubles pair of Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock who claimed silver in the Atlanta Games in 1996.
An honour: Nicol David will be one of the current athletes taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay in Kuala Lumpur on April 21. Other notable athletes selected are current world number one women’s squash player Nicol David, diver Bryan Nickson Lomas, bowler Shalin Zulkifli, former swimmers Lim Keng Liat and Nurul Huda Abdullah, footballer Datuk Soh Chin Ann and hurdler Marina Chin.
Malaysia’s top sports leaders Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah and Tunku Tan Sri Imran Tuanku Ja’afar have also been nominated as torchbearers.
The three participating partners – Coca-Cola, Samsung and Lenovo – will nominate six torchbearers each. The Chinese Embassy in Kuala Lumpur will nominate four torchbearers with the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) naming the other remaining 58 torchbearers.
The last time Kuala Lumpur hosted a leg of the Olympic Torch Relay was in 1964 when Tokyo hosted the Olympics.
In conjunction with the event, OCM will be having an Olympic Torch Relay Fun Run on April 20 at 7.30am.
The 5km Fun Run will have only two categories for male and female participants over the age of 13 at Dataran Merdeka.
The entry fee is RM15 and each participant will be provided with a specially-designed souvenir T-shirt and a finisher’s certificate.
The entry forms can be obtained from the FTAAA office at 2nd floor, Wisma OCM, Jalan Hang Jebat, Kuala Lumpur or downloaded from the OCM website.
The closing date for the submission of entries is April 17. T-shirts will be given to the first 2,000 registered participants.
