NANJING, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Host China continued its dominance on the second day of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2014) but Russia and Hungary kept pace by remaining close to the leader.
China has four gold, one silver, four bronze medals against Russia's tally of 4,1,3 while Hungary made the biggest move today by winning four gold medals and two bronze medals to slip into third place.
Asean representative Thailand with two gold medals jumped from 11th spot to sixth but Malaysia remained outside the medal tally list after failing to win any medals after two days since there were no splash from the pool and shooting range today.
Hopes however, medal hopes remain high as shuttlers have a good chance of moving into the quarterfinals in the individual and mixed doubles competitions.
In the mixed doubles competition, Cheam June Wei partnered Hong Kong's Tsz Yau Ng to beat Wolfgang Gnedt (Austria)/Sabrina Solis (Mexico) 21-9, 21-8, while Lee Ying Ying teamed up with Taiwan's Chia Hung Lu to defeat China's Cao Cung Pham/Aliye Demirbag (Turkey) 21-18, 17-21, 21-7.
At the shooting range, Malaysian shooters ended up empty-handed after Abdul Hadi Abdul Malek managed only 12th spot in the 10m Air Pistol which featured 20 competitors.
National sailors started off the first day action very encouragingly as Asri Azman is fifth in a field of 32 sailors taking part in the men's Byte CII individual event that took place at the Jinniu Lake.
Another sailor, Nurshazrin Mohammad Latif, finished 13th place in a field of 30 participants but hopes remain high.
Tomorrow the focus will be on badminton, swimming, sailing, gymnastics and golf.
