The first ever Olympic Expo will be held in the Olympic city from August 8 to 18, BOCOG announced on December 6.
Jointly sponsored by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), BOCOG, the Chinese Olympic Committee and the China Post Group, the Olympic Expo will be the largest, widest covered and highest level international Olympic cultural event in Olympic history.
Exhibits at the Olympic Expo will include: IOC collections (highlighted by the stamp collections of former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch); Olympic-themed stamps from the China Stamp Museum; Olympic-themed coins from the China Coin Museum; Olympic-themed stamps of international collectors; international Olympic memorabilia collections; and international Olympic art works.
At the launch ceremony, representatives of the sponsoring organizations unveiled the emblem of the Olympic Expo, which symbolizes a piece of red jade transmuted from auspicious clouds.
Also launched was the official website -- www.2008expo.org -- and invitation letters were issued to representatives of the participating nations.
In his speech, BOCOG Executive Vice-President Jiang Xiaoyu said that "in August 2008, Beijing will be a focal point of the world."
He expressed his desire that the Olympic Expo would add splendor to the Olympics, as the expo's colorful exhibits will showcase both the century-old Olympic Movement in China as well as the diverse 5,000-year-old Chinese culture.
