Malaysia’s Asian keirin champion fails to impress in World Cup

PETALING JAYA: Newly–crowned Asian keirin champion Fatehah Mustapa failed to rise to the occasion in her main race at the final round of the World Cup in London on Sunday.

Fatehah was eliminated early in the keirin discipline, the same event where she made a breakthrough at the Asian Cycling Championships in Cheras as the first Malaysian woman winner just a week ago.

The 22-year-old Fatehah rode in the second first round heat of six cyclists and finished fourth when she needed to win it outright to advance straight to the second round.

Her campaign ended when she failed to finish in the top two in the repechage, coming in fourth again.
Fatehah’s rival Lee Wai Sze served a surprise when the Hong Kong sprinter bagged her first World Cup medal after finishing second behind Lithuanian Simona Krupeckaite in the keirin final.

The 2009 world sprint champion Guo Shuang of China took home the bronze. The French-based Chinese cyclist made Asia proud by winning the sprint gold medal on Saturday.

It was also a disappointing day for Azizulhasni Awang and Mohd Edrus Yunos in the men’s sprint.
Azizul failed to get into the top-16 of the elimination rounds after his time of 10.420 was only the 24th fastest in qualification.

Edrus was only 40th fastest with 10.647.
Triple Olympic champion Chris Hoy powered to victory in the sprint to win his second gold medal at the London Velodrome.

Hoy beat Germany’s Maximilian Levy 2-0 in the final to cap a successful outing that also included the keirin gold and team sprint bronze.

The four Malaysian cyclists under the Road to London programme will now return to their training base in Melbourne to prepare for the World Championships to be held from April 4-8.
Fatehah, Azizul, Edrus and Josiah Ng have made the cut for their respective strong disciplines for the world meet, which also takes place in Melbourne.
