Pole vaulter fails even to equal national mark

A SEASON best effort of 4.30m was what Malaysia's Roslinda Samsu will bring home from her debut Olympic outing after the women's pole vault qualifying ended at the National Stadium yesterday.

Roslinda, the Asian Games silver medallist, cleared the height on her first attempt. But she failed in her bid to equal her national mark of 4.40m.

Roslinda was placed joint eighth but well-outside the benchmark of 4.50m as Vanessa Boslak of France led the group of six to qualify from Group B.

World record holder Elena Isinbaeva of Russia was the only one to clear 4.60m. She led five others, including Asian Games gold medallist Gao Shuying, who cleared 4.50m, to complete the list of 12 finalists.
