National Athletes Told To Prepare For Pressure At Highest Level

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 (Bernama) -- National athletes for the Beijing Olympics have been urged to be prepared for the pressure of the competition at the highest level.

National Sports Council (NSC) director-general Datuk Zolkples Embong said they were not only competing in the physical, mental, technical and tactical aspects but also on the spiritual strength.

As it is a daunting task to win medals at the Olympics, all 33 Malaysian athletes in 10 sports must be prepared to take the pressure, he said after signing the National Junior Circuit sponsorship on behalf of the NSC with Sports Excel here Thursday.

On the medal prospect of national shuttler Lee Chong Wei, Zolkples said the NSC was not putting any pressure on the world number two player.

"He is under great pressure because he is not only meeting world top players from China like Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin but also facing them in front of the partisans crowd," he said.

He said besides badminton players, national shooters, divers, swimmers, runners, cyclists, sailors, taekwondo exponents and weightlifters were also under great stress.

The National Junior Circuit, which enter its 17th year, is aimed at uncovering potential athletes in 10 sports.
