One Final Shot For Women's Archers' Olympic Bid

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Bernama) -- The paths to Beijing Olympics are still open for three women's archers provided they finish among the top eight in the upcoming 4th World Archery Championship in France this month.

National Archery Association of Malaysia (NAAM) Secretary-General Hamid Hasan said the championship in Boe, on June 23-29, would be the final avenue for S Anbarasi, Irza Hanie Abu Samah and Nur Amirah Mohamed to prove their Olympic worth.

"There are eight more slots for the event in Beijing. NAAM is confident that one of them will be able to grab one of those slots," he told Bernama Thursday.

In the men's archery, Malaysia's trio of Cheng Chu Sian, Muhammad Marbawi Sulaiman and Wan Mohd Khalmizan Wan Ab Aziz have already qualified for the Olympics and are now undergoing intensive training under their South Korean coach Lee Jae Hyung.

"I believe the men's trio will be able to advance into the semifinal. This is based on their performance as among the top eight archers in the world," he said.

Malaysia sent an archer for the first time at the Athens Olympics in 2004 but Moon Redee Sutyi came back empty handed.
