KUALA LUMPUR, May 26 (Bernama) -- The Beijing Olympics Chef-De-Mission Datuk Hoh Kok Chye has advised the Olympics-bound athletes to be injury-free in their final preparation for the Games in August.
He said the athletes should be more concerned about their food and stay away from any injury that could cost them their participation in Beijing.
"I hope that the athletes will continue to improve themselves in the game and at the same time, avoid injury," he said when met at Bukit Jalil Monday.
As of today, 32 national athletes had already qualified for the Games in eight sports which include aquatic, badminton, cycling, archery, shooting, athletics, sailing and taekwondo.
He said among all the sports Malaysia was participating in the Games, badminton would be the country's best bet to produce gold medal.
"Besides badminton, Malaysian athletes are also very competative in archery and cycling as well and I hope they can make their impact during the Games," he said.
In badminton, the brothers Razif and Jalani Sidek won Malaysia's first Olympic medal when they won the bronze in the Men's Badminton Doubles during the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
Cheah Soon Kit and Yap Kim Hock won Malaysia's second Olympic medal, when they won a silver in the Men's doubles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics while Rashid Sidek clinched a bronze medal in the Men's singles event. But for the last eight years, the shuttlers returned empty handed from the Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympics.
With the men's hockey team failing to make the cut for the Olympics, swimming and badminton had the biggest number of participation with nine while four from cycling, three from athletics, three from archery, two from taekwondo and one each in shooting and sailing.
Bryan Nickson Lomas (men's 10m platform) heads the cast in diving together with Leong Mun Yee and Elizabeth Jimie (women's 3m Springboard) and Pandelela Rinong (women's 10m Platform).
The world No. 2 Lee Chong Wei will lead the team in badminton where the squad is expected to be announced by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) on Friday.
Korat SEA Games gold medallists Daniel Bego, Khoo Cai Lin, Siow Yi Ting, Lew Yih Wey and Leung Chii Lin are in the list for swimming while archery has Cheng Chu Sian, Wan Mohd Khalmizam Wan Abdul Aziz and Mohd Marbawi Sulaiman.
The cycling event will be spearheaded by Azizul Hazni Awang, winner of the keirin and 200m sprint gold, Rizal Tisin, winner of the gold in the 1km time trial and Fatihah Mustapa (silver medallist in 500m time trial), keirin expert Josiah Ng and Junaidi Nasir.
Taekwondo exponents Elaine Teo and Che Chew Chan, Roslinda Samsu (pole vault), Yuan Yufang (athletics), Lee Hup Wei (high jump), Hazli Izwan Amir Hasan (shooting) and Kevin Lim from sailing make up the current list.
