KUALA LUMPUR, April 13 (Bernama) -- The national men's hockey squad finished their Olympic qualifying campaign in third place when they defeated Poland 3-0 in the classification match in Kakamigahara, Japan, today.
Mighty Germany, who did not drop a single match in the qualifier, easily beat Japan 4-0 in the final today to book their ticket to the Beijing Olympics.
Although denied by Japan yesterday, Sarjit Singh's boys showed no mercy for Poland. Tengku Tajuddin Tengku Abdul Jalil started the ball rolling when he sounded the board in the 26th minute before Mohd Amin Rahim made it 2-0 in the 53rd minute.
Tengku Tajuddin, who had a memorable outing at this qualifier, finished things in style for himself when he fired home Malaysia's third goal a minute from time.
When the two teams first met in the round-robin qualifier, Malaysia had edged Poland 2-1.
Against Japan in the cruncher to qualify for the final against Germany yesterday, Malaysia were unfortunate when Japan managed a last gasp goal to ensure the match ended in a 3-3 draw.
Malaysia had needed a win to face Germany in the final.
The other countries in the group were Italy and Switzerland.
